Coping with COVID-19: Episode Six

On May 23, 2020, Selfless Hands Foundation discussed the importance of Self-Care in the Black community with Katrina Leggins!

Katrina Leggins is a mental health therapist and self-care advocate, writer, and speaker. Katrina is the founder and creator of K. Nicole Writing and CEO of the K. Nicole Writing Collection, a t-shirt apparel line focused on raising awareness for self-care and mental health. K. Nicole Writing is an informational and inspirational platform that helps motivate individuals through mental health education, empowerment, and inspiration. Individuals are provided with the tools and resources needed to navigate through life to help accomplish their goals and inspired through positive written expression. Katrina believes in order to achieve a happy and fulfilling life one must start by gaining self-awareness, reclaim their confidence and look past their fears.

Since her adolescence, she has been passionate about helping individuals who struggle with finding their purpose and enjoys playing an active role in their personal journey. Born and raised in Oklahoma City, Katrina knew at an early age that her God-given purpose was to help people. Katrina received her Bachelor’s in Social Work and Masters in Social Work from the University of Oklahoma and is currently working towards obtaining her LCSW. She is extremely dedicated to servicing others believing that everyone has the opportunity to change when introduced to the proper tools and has access to a strong support system.

Growing up, Katrina experienced her own personal trauma and emotional struggles with low self-esteem, anxiety, and failed relationships. Building a solid foundation on God’s word, personal writing, and tapping into her support system, she learned how valuable her life is and was able to take back control. Writing has been a positive outlet for her since grade school. As she grew older, she began to journal and was given a vision to share the words from those pages through her platform, realizing that others could not only identify with her but could use her words to heal.

Katrina has worked in the mental health field for the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health & Substance Abuse Services in various roles at the Central Oklahoma Community Mental Health Center, Children & Family Services division for 7 years to present. She has demonstrated a high level of skill and commitment for working with children, teens, and young adults from various backgrounds, whether it be in a more formal clinical setting, or working more directly in community and school-based services. When she’s not in the office, she loves traveling, writing, and spending quality time with family and friends. Her personal motto is, “Before you can help and inspire others you must be willing to be transparent about your own story”.
