2 Reasons Why I Founded Selfless Hands Foundation - One

I was 19 when I decided I wanted to serve the community on a much bigger scale, but I didn’t want to establish a nonprofit. I just wanted to do the work! I wanted to do the homeless and family welfare initiative but under a nonprofit organization to help a local nonprofit organization expand.

I’d been researching the nonprofit world for years and I was all about collaborating. It really didn’t make sense to start my own nonprofit when it was plenty of others I could just work with and under.

I reached out to many nonprofits I knew of, and folks shot the idea down. I guess it was only enough room on the table for them to eat.

So, after praying and continuing to work in my purpose, I decided to start my own. I only had one mentor, who I met during my Hurricane Harvey service project in Houston, who became a Grandfather figure to me and has ran his center for over 40 years.

The journey wasn’t easy but I take pride in the fact that I learned majority of this on my own, and my mentor helped guide me through the rest.

Moral of the story, if you want something bad enough, you’ll put in the work. I never asked for handouts. I stayed to myself and in my lane. I didn’t rush it or pay attention to what people “thought” I should be doing.
