Know Your Rights : Community BBQ and Clean Up
Hey there,
We had a #SelflessSaturday on June 27, 2020. We started the day off with our Neighborhood Clean up. on our adopted street Prospect Avenue. There were 20 volunteers who came out to beautify our adopted street, Prospect Avenue between Northeast 23rd street and Northeast 36th street. It was awesome to see many volunteers and community members working together. We filled 4 gallon size trash bags. We had a large turnout of volunteers to come out. We we’re able to make many connections with some of our new volunteers. We began at our meet up location, Thelma Reese Elementary School. After everyone was given supplies, water, and masks, we were split into 2 groups of 10 and were able to finish our clean up in a timely manner.
After we ended our clean up, we began setting up for the Know Your Rights Barbeque. The barbeque was held at Phillips Park Pavilion located at NE 28th and Prospect Ave,
We were joined by 10 volunteers and vendors who helped the barbeque a success. Bottled water, snacks, ice, and coolers were provided by local organization, Eastside Steppers. The menu included, Hot dogs, Burgers, baked beans donated by Debra of George’s Happy Hog Barbeque Restaurant, 3 meat Alfredo pasta by S & D Smokehouse, ans mini cupcakes by Karma Cupcakes of Oklahoma City. While the adults enjoyed conversation and games of Uno, Dominoes, and cards, the kids got to enjoy water balloons, jumping on a moonbounce, playing on park equipment, and snow cones prepared by local company, Black Ice. We listed to new and old school jams by our very own local dj, DJ Chief Tre.
Many of our guests were neighbors and supports of Selfless Hands, to include Councilwoman Nikki Nice and House District 97 Candidate, Susan Porter. These ladies came to spread awareness of the changes that can be made to help end police brutality.
While we were low in attendance of guest, we were high with food to serve our local community. We were also able to provide plates to the local homeless community in Downtown Oklahoma City.
